Here are my top things to do in Istanbul. I chose these not because they are popular, but because I think they are worth seeing or experiencing. I also want to draw attention to many hidden gems, often overlooked when preparing for your visit. Enjoy!

1. Basilica Cistern

Open hours: every day 9AM–5:30PM
This landmark is very ancient and rich in history with a unique vibe and atmosphere. It is unbelievable how the Basilica Cistern was a surprising building, how they made it, and how they built it. The inside of the old column was built to commemorate the slaves who died in the construction of the cistern. It is told that Medusa snake-haired woman was buried here. There are two columns with Medusa or processing, which seems to confirm 90%.
2. Hagia Sophia Museum

Unforgettable place to visit. Once a symbol of Christianity and later a Muslim Mosque for the Ottoman Empire today a museum that holds both religions in one place. Impressive structure and some of the best mosaic art of the time. Museum keeps good security and outside landscape is well kept and clean. Try the sesame pretzels and the roasted chestnuts with Turkish coffee for the whole experience.
3. The Blue Mosque

The Blue Mosque is one of the most beautiful mosques in the world. Its real name is the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, but people know it as the Blue Mosque because of the handmade ceramic tiles that line the walls. The mosque is very popular among the Muslim world as well as western. Free entry to see inside but shoes off and appropriate covering for women, which is provided during visiting hours.
4. Galata Tower

The tower itself isn’t very tall, but there aren’t any tall structures around so you get a good view. The tower is located on top of a hill. It’s a bit of a strenuous walk but the approach streets are really cute. The elevator takes you up most of the way but you still have to take the stairs up 2 levels. There are a restaurant and a cafe at the top, both reasonably priced.
5. Grand Bazaar

It is known to be the oldest shopping area with more than 4000 shops in the area which means more options to look for. The scarves were exquisite, the coats were different and Turkish delight is a specialty. We tried apple tea in hot water and it tasted amazing. Those aren’t the only flavors available. There is pomegranate, blueberry, strawberry, etc. Bargaining is a must if you want to buy something there. They will be a little rude so be prepared. In the end, as we were departing, we cooled ourselves down with fresh pomegranate juice – which is a specialty there too.
6. Miniaturk

A fabulous place full of little models of the various monuments in Istanbul and Turkey. They are all in great condition and in intricate detail. It’s a nice walk and value for money for outing. There are a play area and a couple of attractions like a 4d video experience and a nice little maze.
7. 15 July Martyrs Bridge

Also known as Bosphorus bridge it connects Asia to Europe and that itself is a big deal. A bridge connecting two continents. The sad thing is that you can’t walk on this one but you can drive or have a ferry ride below it. The bridge in itself is very beautiful and amazing during sunset. Also if you don’t want to spend more money you can try Tyrol ferry services. They do a round trip to Bosphorus every hour and costs only 20 Turkish Liras.
8. Isfanbul Eğlence ve Yaşam Merkezi (Theme Park)

Cost: 20 USD
There are two main adult games and many children games. The adult games are a thrilling roller-coaster (quite difficult for people who aren’t used to these things) and a very enjoyable machine that swings you in the air (moderate difficulty but do much fun). Park also has restaurants and is adjacent to the mall so you always can have a quick bite. You have a caricature artist and some high tech games such as virtual reality and watching a clip inside a dome which was pleasant. Price is relatively expensive but you can repeat as much as you like) but acceptable if you plan to spend the day there.
9. SEA LIFE Istanbul

Entry fee: 57 Lira

They have the longest underwater fish tunnel in Europe and also a great variety of different types of fish. The highlights are most definitely the biggest sea turtle of Europe and the 4 meter long sharks. It is located inside Istanbul mall, one of the largest malls in the country.
10. Prince Island

The Prince Islands are a cluster of 9 islands southeast of Istanbul in the Sea of Marmara. Mainly car-free, the islands are known for their horse-drawn carriages (phaetons). At the highest point of Büyükada, the largest island, the 6th-century Hagia Yorgi Church has panoramic views. Nearby are the pine forests of Dil Burnu National Park. The Museum of the Princes’ Islands has exhibits on the islands’ history.
