Things to do in Pontianak

Split by the lower reaches of the Kapuas River, on the island of Borneo, Pontianak is a melting pot of Chinese, Dayak and Malay ethnic and making it an interesting place to explore.

1. Equator Monument

The Equator Monument. Known as “Equator City, Pontianak is the largest city on the Earth’s longest invisible line, the equator.  It is at the exact center of the earth so you can actually stand on two hemispheres.
The amount of time of day and night is the same 12 hours 365 days a year. On 23 March and 23 September of the year if you stand at the line of the equator at 12 noon there would not be any shadow.

2. West Kalimantan Museum

Museum Negeri of West Kalimantan displays a comprehensive collection of Dayak tribal masks, tattoo blocks, weapons and musical instruments and an overview of local Dayak, Malay and Chinese cultures. The entrance fee for tourist is IDR 10K. Take a tour of the museum compound too, there are miniature of old houses and transport used by the Sultan and commoner.
